Service Catalog
The Service Catalog is a centralized view of all the services your organization has used. It serves as a dynamic reference that provides visibility into what services are being consumed and how much they cost.
At its core, the catalog helps you:
- Understand service costs across all cloud providers
- Compare public list rates to your negotiated contracted rates
- Inform budget planning
Start by navigating to the Service Catalog page by finding it on the left navigation list in the Manage section or by using this link.
How to Explore the Catalog
To begin exploring rates, use the following filters:
Provider: e.g. AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
Service Names: These refer to the individual cloud services you’ve used. Examples include:
- AWS: Lambda, EC2, S3
- Azure: Virtual Machines, Blob Storage
- GCP: Compute Engine, Cloud Storage
Service Categories: Services are grouped into broader categories for easier browsing. For example:
- Compute: AWS EC2, Azure Virtual Machines, GCP Compute Engine
- Storage: AWS S3, Azure Blob Storage, GCP Cloud Storage
- Messaging: AWS SNS/SQS, Azure Service Bus, GCP Pub/Sub
These filters help you quickly locate relevant services and assess the cost implications of different options. This is ideal when planning new projects or evaluating architecture changes.
Viewing Rate Details
Once you select a service, clicking on a row opens the detailed rate breakdown. Here, you can further filter by: Region: View rates by region (e.g., us-east-1 for AWS, eastus for Azure, us-central1 for GCP). Rate Types: Understand how services are priced. Examples include:
- GB-Month (storage)
- vCPU-Hour (compute)
- Requests (API calls)
- Notifications
- Data Transfer GB
- Read/Write Operations
Descriptions: Each rate includes a detailed description of the charge. These charge descriptions are derived from the FinOps Foundation’s FOCUS billing specification and describe exactly what is being billed. For example:
- “AWS Lambda - Total Compute (Provisioned) for ARM - US West (Oregon)”
- “$0.03 per GB-mo of log storage - US West (Oregon)”
These details help you understand cost drivers, identify areas of heavy usage, and validate invoices or forecasts.
